Day 2: Musings on a Monster |

I went with the Subterran Uprising faction mostly because I wanted to take these challenges with a new faction but I wanted stay within the Fiends agenda so that my new figures could work easily with my beloved Lords of Cthul. Of the monster choices I had in the faction, I picked Grindix because he seems like the stronger of the two with a more consistent damage output. I'll have to get some games in with Drillcon as well so I'll have some comparisons.

Grindix is a strong brawler and solid monster. His brawl stat is awesome with three boost dice and the rest of his stats are consistently average or better. In addition, he has really cool abilities that compliment his status as a brawler.
Strengths:
With a terrific brawl stat, three brawl triggers, and no ranged attack, Grindix gets his dirty work done with brawls. His stat helps ensure that he'll hit often and Lightning Attack gives him a reliable way to inflict two points of damage without relying on super damage or the opponents proximity to buildings and hazards. I have included units with Flank and Weaken to make Grindix hit more often as well as reduce the number of dice he needs to spend to hit (increasing the number of back to back monster activations).
Synchronized Move is a pretty cool ability because it allows you to move units in your monster activations. This helps the units keep up with Grindix and reduces the number of dice spent to move them. In addition, screening Grindix requires less foresight because you can move some of your units up to screen while he's brawling the enemy.
Speed 6 doesn't make Grindix the fastest monster around but it's decent. As a brawler he's most comfortable adjacent to an enemy and burrow really helps here by giving him more movement options. I've also thrown in the Oil Refinery (for Fuel Depot) and the Task Master (for Motivator) to supplement his speed further and get to grips with an opponent.
Grindix also has a good power stat that will let him take advantage of a positioning for a good power attack. He also has an great way to generate scores of power dice with Super Stomp, lessening his reliance on a power base.
Grindix's Ultra form just takes what's good about his alpha and makes it better. His brawl, power and speed stats go up and he gains the Grind trigger, which dishes out more damage than Lightning Attack.
Weaknesses:
Grindix's biggest weakness is his lack of a blast attack since this means he has almost no way to inflict damage unless he's adjacent to his target (he could use the swat power attack to launch a unit into the enemy monster but even then he needs to be adjacent to the unit).
Monsters who you might struggle against:
Grindix would have some trouble against blasting monsters and monsters that are faster than him (especially ones with additional movement like Hit and Run). Blasting monsters don't have to get near an enemy monster to damage it and since Grindix doesn't have a blast attack of his own, they could be inflicting damage with having to worry about retaliation. Faster monster are a similar problem because even if they need to get close, they can back off after the attack.
The monsters Grindix would have the most trouble with with are ones that are a combination of the two types mentioned above because they would be able to attack from range and then put even more distance between Grindix and themselves.
These are my opening thoughts on Grindix. I'd be interested to hear what others think of him. |

Axl says: Grindix is, indeed, a pretty good monster. I don't think fast monsters should be too worrisome due to the fact that, once you get into the fray, you have a pretty hard time getting out of it.
Next, if you want to pull off more Grinds, make sure you have some decent Power Production options. He needs a ton of Power to reliably Smash for 3-4 damage. I'd recommend some Amplify, and, if your list is Blasty, the best form of Amp you could gain would be the Earth Avatar, since if you also splashed a Fire Kami Elite then you could Nesting it out for one and reap the benefits of Ignite AND Rage.
Just a few quick tips. I've played Big-G at tourneys before, and know how to use him pretty effectively. I'll be sure to comment on your blogs in the future. =) |
